Your Sustainable Sourcing Partners

BASF works with its suppliers to minimize risks and to advance an industry transformation towards sustainability.

BASF wants to ensure that its renewable-based products are made from sustainably sourced raw materials. Our key renewable raw materials are palm oil, palm kernel oil and fish oil, which are used to produce pharmaceutical APIs, excipients and processing aids.

Truly Sustainable Palm Oil

BASF’s focus the past few years has been on certified sustainable palm kernel oil through our certified supply chains to increase traceability. We are a pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry, producing lipid-based pharma-ceutical excipients with 100% certified palm oil. The RSPO certification process is currently the most transparent and effective initiative globally to improve the entire palm oil sector, requiring certification from the entire supply chain, including from BASF. Our customers receive the product with RSPO certification at no additional cost.

Leaders In Carbon Management

In recent decades, BASF has already achieved a considerable reduction in CO2 emissions by optimizing energy generation and production processes as well as systematically reducing emissions of nitrous oxide.

We work continuously to further reduce emissions from our production. We have set ourselves ambitious quantitative goals and are striving worldwide to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. In addition, we want to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by 25 percent by 2030 compared with 2018 – and to achieve this despite targeted growth . This means cutting CO2 emissions in half in the current business by the end of this decade.

Calculating Carbon Footprint

By the end of 2021, BASF will become the first provider of a tool for the calculation of its carbon footprint portfolio. In its ibuprofen manufacturing process alone, BASF has reduced its carbon footprint by 16% since the first study was published in 2002 on efficiency improvement of the entire process at the company’s manufacturing site in Bishop, Texas. This sustainability assessment was conducted internally following methodology ISO-standards of life-cycle assessment (LCA) and elaborated on by an expert group at Technical University of Berlin.
